Designer Diary #11 – New Archetype? New Ideas vs. Old Favorites in RPG Design

Living with Sig means a front-row seat to his world of game design. This week’s Designer Diary video shows his constant struggle: balancing brilliant new mechanics with respect for game tradition.

He’s always got a million ideas! Whether it’s Everyday Heroes or Shotgun Fantasy, he gets so excited about a new archetype or clever twist. He loves to innovate and make things better.

But he also cares deeply about the players and their existing games. He worries about too much change. That’s why he uses a modular approach to game design. New rules are add-ons, not replacements.

The Pacific Rim RPG, using Everyday Heroes rules, is a great example. It added cool new stuff without changing the core RPG rules. It felt new but familiar.

With Shotgun Fantasy, the goal is to connect D&D and Everyday Heroes. This requires balancing innovation in RPGs with familiar rules.

And now, he’s buzzing about a potential new character archetype for Everyday Heroes! He’s eager to hear what the community wants.

So, what do you prefer? When a game adds new things, do you want exciting new mechanics or more traditional RPG gameplay?

Come tell him on their Discord channel! He’s always there, wanting your feedback on game development and indie RPGs.
